A downloadable game for Windows

v0.2 was uploaded before the deadline and is playable, but with two major bugs:

v0.2 bugs:

  • *In order to activate "online" mode, you must edit and save your gambits at least once*
  • *The first condition block doesn't work in gambit editor. I broke it some moments before uploading my latest version :')*

Other bugs:

  • After doing 1 or 2 runs, challenge mode may randomly kick you out to main menu. This can be resolved by restarting the game.

If you're here to just play the game, check out v0.3, uploaded 30 minutes after the deadline was a fast-follow to fix the above two bugs. No new content, promise!

If you're here to rate the game based on the rules of the jam, go ahead and check out v0.2-- it's fully playable, but you may be at a disadvantage vs online teams.

Challenge mode matchmakes you against real players' builds! Try to go for 5 wins!

With the prompt in mind, I selected on "Plans" to represent crafting a strategy to defeat any enemy team! Inspired by Unicorn Overlord, I wanted to make my own "Gambit" system as a prototype/learning practice.

I had three goals going into this, with prompt in hand

-Unicorn Overlord is cool, but I wanted to make an asynchronous autobattler like backpack battles/bazaar/super auto pets.

-I haven't written a lick of Lua code before. A week prior to the jam, I read through https://rvagamejams.com/learn2love/ learn2love, a wonderful resource for anyone starting Lua

-I wanted to fully lean into "Vibe Coding", with my Cursor IDE. I learned a lot about what prompts worked, what didn't, and when to take matters into my own hands with the debugger. (Protip! Ask it to make a .md file for a readme/feature doc. It forces it to spit out its entire plans, you can edit them and always reference the markdown document when prompting context)

--Lua seemed to be a good candidate for abusing ai generated code since it's a lightweight framework. I wrote the pseudocode for the engine/game loop, and it gave me (sometimes) working code. Neat!
